Unita Mountains

The day started out like the last 30 some days had begun. Get up, rummage through stuff, and forget nearly everything.

Note to all: It is difficult preparing for a 40-day camp trip after you just unloaded a moving truck. I thought we were organized and ready until I opened the same packing bin three times after opening twenty before — stalking the elusive proverbial lost sock or the forgotten box of painting gloves, the book, or the sleeping bag.

On the Road

Once we pulled out the driveway, we left with and without some things. We gassed up and put tires on the highway around 2:30 pm. As we neared Kamus, Rex reminisced about camping, fishing, and backpacking with good friends and also solo journeys in the area.

The skies opened up to scenic mountain views, as the clouds gathered and temperatures cooled. We clued in quick that we were racing a thunderstorm. We found a spot in Upper Setting in the Uinta Mountains. We had just enough time to set up the tent and climb inside, as the thunder and rain hit our heels.

Raindrops on Rain Flaps

After a short siesta in the summer rain, we opened the zip flap to the late afternoon sun and inspiring views. Rex painted while I wrote about the day and caught up on the previous day. Much to my delight, I had service.  My fingers still lingered on the pulse of my connection to the world.

Turning Down the Day

The evening sun welcomed a quick and tasty dinner of open-faced turkey sandwiches. Rex sang a little ditty about figuring out where everything goes, while I introduced “cheese meat bread and beer.” As twilight turned to dusk,  we peeped the starlight in between waves of clouds. It was a great first day on the road.
