Plein Air Public Lands: Day 5
By: Kristina Lyn Heitkamp
Uinta Mountains
I have found my new favorite camp and plein air spot. I like to call it Moose Meadow or Crane Valley. The second morning in Moose Meadow, the Cranes woke us with their silvery duet, announcing their morning arrival.
Grape Jelly in Moose Valley
After coffee, Rex prepared a gourmet breakfast of pepper jack cheese, grape jelly, and hot habanero sauce–all warmed on a tortilla. Think jalapeño jam on toast. We savored our meal while watching Miss Moose graze in the meadow. We nodded to our breakfast company.
Before pulling out the paintbrushes and pencils, we decided to get cleaned up. Today was a shower day. We warmed up a few gallons of water in the solar shower, popped up the privacy tent, and lathered up. It is amazing what a lukewarm shower can do for a camper’s spirit. We scrubbed our undercarriages and washed the grease from our hair. I felt like a new woman.
TMI WARNING: the privacy tent doubles as a loo, but set up in a different area for obvious reasons. The twenty-dollar toilet seat, five-dollar shovel, and privacy tent all make for the best NRP (nice relaxing poo) ever! Highly recommended if you plan to spend more than a few days camping. Worth every penny.
Quick Study
Feeling fresh and ever so clean, Rex got busy painting.
Later, as we enjoyed a tumbler of Malbec around the fire with Miss Moose, my thoughts honed in on all our Kickstarter backers. Without their generous support, encouragement, and love for our shared public lands and the arts–we would not have this amazing opportunity.
